The Prometheus myth meets downtown NYC.

In the early aughts, Pado took the Prometheus myth and dragged it to the Lower East Side. Golden Vines and Honey Wine is a creepy-sweet musical about the equally evil Summer and Winter queens. As the plotting Winter Queen, Pado schemes like Lady MacBeth, all the while whispering incantations and singing songs about gnomes and trolls. Their battle to the death includes: felt puppets, beeswax, flower crowns, and pretty-atonal songs. Pado’s magical lyrics/spells and snappy rapport danced the show through an hour of laughter and horrific, dark mayhem. Huge, bulbous pillars tower over the stage. Golden Vines may be the only musical to use smell-o-vision; the house was doused with lavender to create a magical forest of calm, vaguely New Age, culty chic. The entirety of Goddess collaborated on the funny, grim songs, with Pado writing the lyrics and singing lead vocals. Did I mention that this show was put up in a loft gallery with steps so steep that it felt like a beginner ropes course? Well, that was 2007, the recession was here, and there was nothing to do but make good art.
